How Can You be in Two Places at Once?

Have you ever felt your business life would be much easier if you could clone yourself? I know I have! As a business owner, you’ll always feel you need to be in two (or more) places at once. Unfortunately, cloning is out of the question, so how can you be in two places at once?

The first step is to accept you can’t personally be in two places at the same time. That seems counter-intuitive to say in this article, but once you accept that you can’t personally do it, you can find plenty of ways to be in two places at the same time.

How Can You be in Two Places at Once?

If you’re serious about getting on top of your work and getting more done, you have to stop trying to do everything yourself. Do the work that no one else can do that earns the big bucks, and outsource everything else.

You need to find the things you don’t want or need to do and hand them over to someone else. If you hand over to someone you can trust then you can be in two places at the same time.

Letting go of work makes most business owners feel uncomfortable.

  • “They won’t do it as well as me”
  • “It’s quicker to do it myself”
  • “I can’t afford to pay someone else”

These are some of the most common objections. In very rare cases, they might even be valid!

I fully understand these concerns – I grapple with them myself. But when you look closely, you’ll find they simply aren’t valid. They’re either excuses to avoid risks or things we tell ourselves to feel better about ourselves. If nobody can do this thing as well as you then you must be very valuable. If you can’t afford to pay someone then you don’t have to go through the process of choosing someone.

Again, I’m not judging because I’m telling you this applies to all of us, which includes me. Thinking this way is very short sighted and the best way to keep your business small. Or worse, lead it to closure.

You are the owner and leader of your business. If you’re doing the “grunt work”, as important as it might be, you’re going to burn out – FAST. If you want to be a real business owner, you must put a team of trusted people in place. Otherwise, you just have a job. There’s nothing wrong with that, but you need to be aware of the choice you’re making.

When I say you need a team of trusted people around you, I don’t mean direct employees. Often employing an agency is a much more effective way to do that. It’ll cost you less, and they won’t need as much training if any.

The difficulty is that getting people on board or using an outsourcing service is more work upfront. You’ve got to choose someone and bring them up to speed. There will be paperwork and phone calls. There are likely to be some teething problems (on both sides) as you get to know how the other works.

But here’s the thing … after you get over that hill, your business will be more efficient and more productive. That means it can generate more income, be less stressful and even be more saleable.

Let’s just pretend for a moment that you and your business is one of those rare ones. You actually are the best person to do a particular task that could be outsourced. You actually are quicker and do it better. Don’t forget, you’re also the main breadwinner in your business.

To keep the sums simple, let’s say you can charge or otherwise make your business £100 an hour. If you currently losing five hours a week to a particular task, then getting someone else to do it adds £500 a week income to your business minus the costs of getting them to do it, which I promise will be less than £500 a week.
