How Was Business in 2018?
You should be pretty much all wrapped up on 2018 by now. Ready to take a little break before you launch yourself and your business into 2019.
It’s a great time to reflect on the year gone by, if you haven’t done it already.
No doubt you’ve faced some challenges and had some opportunities. Life as a business owner can be up and down, to say the least. When you’re in the moment, it can be difficult to see all the progress you’ve made. The end of the year is a great time to do that. Here are a few places to start.
The Hard Numbers
How have your numbers changed from last year? Have you got more staff? Higher turnover? More customers? Larger profits? There are lots of ways your number could have improved. Choose five numbers that are important to you.
If they haven’t gone up, now is a great time to ask yourself why not? Did something or someone get in the way? Did you focus on the right areas? If you can correctly identify the problem areas, you’ll know what to be aware of next year.
Did you set goals for 2018? If so, how did you do? Which goals did you achieve, and which one did you miss? How close did you get to the ones you missed? Can you put your finger on what prevented you from reaching all your goals? Were they achievable in the first place?
If you didn’t set any goals make sure you set some for 2019. Goals need to be exciting otherwise you won’t drive towards them. Increasing turnover by 50% is a good goal, but it’s not very exciting. Think about what that might let you do? Perhaps you could take your dream holiday or buy your dream car? Whatever it is that floats your boat, set your sights on it. You’ll do better if you start moving towards that goal. If it’s a dream holiday go and book it now for the end of 2019. You’ll have to pay a deposit but that’ll just be more motivation for you.
How Do You Feel About It?
This one’s more difficult, but it can be very telling. How do you feel about where you and your business are now and why? It’s a very personal one, so I’m not going to say too much about it.
The point is to examine your own feelings. You might come to realise you’ve been pushing in the wrong direction, or that you need to take a step back. It’s a funny thing. Sometimes we feel like we want one thing only to find out we wanted another thing when we get there.
Don’t put in all that effort.
Take a moment to stop and think.
2019 is right around the corner.
